The art of starving your distractions

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

Starve your distractions. Feed your focus.

In this day and age, there are so many distractions that can cause us to lose focus on achieving our goals. Regardless if your goal is physical, philosophical, spiritual or otherwise, It’s important to identify and assess the world around you. What are you trying to achieve in your life? In your relationships? In this very moment? Whenever, wherever, whatever you want to achieve, it starts with eliminating distractions and feeding your focus.

I read a story somewhere about an ancient Indian sage who was teaching his disciples the skill of archery. The sage set a wooden bird as the target and asked his disciples to aim at the eye of the bird. He asked the first disciple to describe what he saw.

“I see the trees, the branches, the leaves, the sky, the bird and its eye”, the disciple replied. The sage told the first disciple to wait and then turned to the second disciple to ask him the same question.

“I only see the eye of the bird.”

The sage said, “Very well then, Shoot!!” The second disciple shot his arrow and it flew right through the eye of the bird.

If we truly focus and eliminate all the distractions around us, we can, without a doubt, achieve our goals. Although it is hard to master sometimes, focus, like archery, is a skill that can be honed.

  • Sit quietly and meditate on a significant goal you have been trying to achieve.

  • Breathe slowly and ask yourself what is distracting you from reaching this goal.

  • With your eyes closed, focus on that goal, like the eye of the wooden bird.

  • Imagine that nothing else exists but that goal until you can clearly see your path to success.

  • Now, Shoot!!!
